Tunable photonic delay lines in optical fibers

چکیده
A R TI C LE Abstract A comprehensive overview is presented about optical fiber-based tunable photonic delay lines, which have been steadily developed over the last decade for the realization of all-optically controlled timing functions. The most widely used techniques, such as those based on slow & fast light and wavelength conversion associated to dispersion, are described and their physical limitations are discussed in terms of the maximal achievable delay, the associated signal distortion and signal bandwidth. Besides, an entirely different approach for all-optical signal delaying is introduced. This technique is based on movable grating reflectors dynamically generated in highly birefringent optical fibers. This type of delay line has experimentally demonstrated large tunable delaying with a moderate signal distortion for high capacity optical data streams and even for wideband analog signals.

متن کاملComplementary apodized grating waveguides for tunable optical delay lines.
A novel class of high-speed and tunable integrated photonic delay lines that compromise between loss and size is proposed. The devices consist of two cascaded apodized grating waveguides and with complementary (positively and negatively modulated) refractive index profiles for dispersion compensation. It is shown that the compact tunable delay lines are low-loss and offer long true-time delays ...
متن کاملBroadband true time delay for microwave signal processing, using slow light based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers.
We experimentally demonstrate a novel technique to process broadband microwave signals, using all-optically tunable true time delay in optical fibers. The configuration to achieve true time delay basically consists of two main stages: photonic RF phase shifter and slow light, based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in fibers. Dispersion properties of fibers are controlled, separately at optica...
